三、阅读
Passage 1
Do you know how to use a mobile phone (手机) without being rude to the people around you?
Talking during a performance irritates (激怒) people. If you are expecting an emergency call, sit near the exit doors and set your phone to vibrate (振动).When your mobile phone vibrates, you can leave quietly and let the others enjoy the performance.
Think twice before using mobile phones in elevators, museums, churches or other indoor public places especially enclosed spaces. Would you want to listen to someone’s conversation in these places? Worse yet, how would you feel if a mobile phone rang suddenly during a funeral! It happens more often than you think. Avoid these embarrassing situations by making sure your mobile phone is switched off.
When eating at a restaurant with friends, don’t place your mobile phone on the table. This conveys the message that your phone calls are more important than those around you.
Mobile phones have sensitive microphones that allow you to speak at the volume you would on a regular phone. This enables you to speak quietly so that others won’t hear the details of your conversations. If you are calling from a noisy area, use your hand to direct your voice into the microphone.
Many people believe that they can’t live without their mobile phone. Owning a mobile phone definitely makes life more convenient, but limit your conversations to urgent ones and save the personal calls until you are at home.

Everybody has an opinion about telecommuting (远程办公). “It won’t work in most jobs”, “It costs too much”, “It reduces air pollution”, “It helps people balance family and work responsibilities”, and “Most people are doing it”.
In reality, researchers continue to find strong growth and acceptance of telecommuting. Nearly two-thirds of the top 1,000 companies in the world have a telecommuting program, and 92 percent say it reduces cost and improves worker productivity (生产力). The days of everyone commuting to the office five days a week are quickly disappearing.
Telecommuting involves a non-traditional work arrangement enabling workers to work at home or elsewhere, some or all of the time. This is not a new, novel, or untested way of working.
But is it for you? Telecommuting is not a panacea (万能药). Whether you are a manager, or an HR (Human Resources) specialist, there are decisions to make and actions to take before you begin a telecommuting arrangement.

Passage 4
Being a salesman, the most important thing is to understand people. You have got to know what they are thinking. If you can figure that out, you can get them to do a lot. They come in with an idea about what they want. You get them talking about themselves, about what they like.
If you are a man, you talk about football, or something like that. If it is a woman, you ask her about fashions. That way they get comfortable with you. You ask them a lot of questions and get them saying yes. Then they just get into the habit of saying yes.
In the end, you can put them into anything you want, if you are really good. For example, if they need a little car for the city; you send them a truck. Of course, I would not really do that. It would not be right. You have got to sell on this job, but you also have to be fair. It is not fair to take advantage of people too much. There are some people in this business who would do anything. But I don’t believe in that.

Passage 5
The holiday shopping season got off to a flying start over the Thanksgiving (感恩节) weekend in the U.S. Retailers (零售商) attracted discount-hungry consumers with specials (特价商品) of televisions, DVD players and other gifts. Discounters like Wal-Mart and Target had the greatest success, offering customers early bird specials, while major department stores and clothing chains only met modest sales goals. Online sales were also strong.
“It was as expected. It wasn’t a source of great prosperity, but it was a good start,” said Nevill, a man in a US retail consulting firm. He said, “One thing we often heard was that only things marked down (降价) were selling. Consumers want a bargain, especially around the holiday.” Shoppers did seem to like the many markdowns. A lady in the State of Connecticut said, “I’ve never seen so many sales. I feel like a kid in a candy store.”
Nevill estimated that discounters had a 4% gain over last year’s Thanksgiving figure, while sales at department stores and mall-based clothing chains were up 2% for the weekend. However, the Thanksgiving weekend is not necessarily a good way to judge how retailers will be successful for the season. Over the past few years, the weekend accounted for less than 10% of sales.
Online merchants also had a good weekend. Sales were up 61% last Friday, compared to the day after Thanksgiving a year ago.

Passage 6
Marketing by emailing is on the increase. Compared to other media, email messages are extremely cheap to send. With TV, you are spending on ad agencies and cable channels. With printed ads, you are helping to keep newspapers and magazines alive. Direct mail costs more than $600 per thousand pieces. With email, there are almost no costs at all. Its low cost makes email marketing become the most cost-effective(划算的) advertising method available today.
With TV, you do not know who is watching your ads. Even with direct mail, you cannot be sure that your mail has been delivered, or that any one reads it when it gets there. With email, you know within 24 hours exactly which messages have been opened by whom, what links the openers clicked on(点击), and what part of your message was working.
Because of electronic links, those who open your emails can do their own research: they can explore and see any of the thousands of products that you sell. They can see the colors and sizes. They can, and they do, read rating and reviews. They can put products in their shopping carts and buy them.
( )1. Email marketing has become the most cost-effective advertising method because

Passage 7
The appeal of advertising to buying motives can have both negative and positive effects. Consumers may be convinced to buy a product of poor quality or high price because of an advertisement. For example, some advertisers appealed to people's desire for better fuel economy for their cars by advertising automotive products that improve gasoline mileage. Some of the products work. Others are worthless and a waste of consumers' money.
Sometimes advertising is intentionally misleading. A few years ago a brand of bread was offered to dieters (节食者)with the message that there were fewer calories (热量单位:卡)in every slice. It turned out that the bread was not dietetic (适合于节食的), but just regular bread. There were fewer calories because it was sliced very thin, but there were the same number of calories in every loaf.
On the positive side, emotional appeals may respond to a consumer's real concerns. Consider fire insurance. Fire insurance may be sold by appealing to fear of loss. But fear of loss is the real reason for fire insurance. The security of knowing that property is protected by insurance makes the purchase of fire insurance a worthwhile investment for most people. If consumers consider the quality of the insurance plans as the message in the ads, they will benefit from the advertising.
Each consumer must evaluate her or his own situation. Are the benefits of the product important enough to justify buying it? Advertising is intended to appeal to consumers, but it does not force them to buy the product. Consumers still control the final buying decision.

Everybody has an opinion about telecommuting(远程办公). “It won’t work in most jobs”, “It costs too much”, “It reduces air pollution”, “It helps people balance family and work responsibilities”, and “Most people are doing it”.

Passage 9
During the last decade computers have developed at such an enormous speed in terms of capacity, efficiency and versatility that they have practically "invaded" almost each and every human domain(领域). They have undoubtedly gone far beyond the expectations of a generation that had already lived under the spell(一段时间) of the TV set.
Throughout history there have been inventions that have been particularly remarkable and influential(有影响力的) within the scope of transport, education, health or communication. They have brought out comfort, health, knowledge or power. Some of them have produced minor effects; others have brought about very great changes. Think of the invention of the wheel, the automobile or the printing press, and what about the computer?
At the beginning the computer was thought mainly as an instrument to be used in the mathematical field, but soon people from other sciences began to get interested in this little "brain" that was capable of performing thousands of operations in a few seconds without getting tired or confused. They realized it could not only store millions of pages of information but also organize it in every possible way enabling man to carry out tasks unthinkable by other means.
Computers are now everywhere. They can make vehicles at supersonic(超音速的) speed and precision; they can control world banking transactions(交易), predict weather conditions, conduct an aircraft or a space craft, play instruments, manage nuclear weapons; they can operate on human patients, they can transfer information from one continent to another in seconds, they can...they can...they can... Yet, thank God, they still need human beings: to draw the instructions, to design the programs or to push the button!

Passage 10
Task 1
Many jobs have been lost and they may not be coming back. Some occupations had already been declining for years due to advances in technology and changes in the global economy. The following is a list of careers that are disappearing.
Stage Performers
The five-year decline for this career was a surprising 61%. Stage performances have fallen out of fashion and have been almost entirely replaced with movies and home entertainment technologies.
Postal Service Mail Sorters(分拣员)
After losing almost 57,000 jobs between 2004 and 2009, a further 30% decline in this occupation can be seen by 2018. With more automatic processes for mail sorting and increasing correspondence via e-mail and fax, this job is quickly becoming unnecessary.
Office Support Workers
About 300,000 office support jobs disappeared between 2004 and 2009. Secretaries and file clerks are no longer in demand as companies cut costs. Moreover, technologies like voicemail and easy-to-use word processors have enabled professionals to do their own office work.
Photo Processors
With the rise of digital photography and automatic printing, positions for manual photo printers are rapidly disappearing. The occupation has been steadily losing jobs in the last five years and there might be a 24% decline by 2018.
